Flying Lotus – Until the Quiet Comes [Album Review]
Steven Ellison aka Flying Lotus returns after what seems a painstakingly long wait
with ‘Until the Quiet Comes’, an 18-track album that dives deeps into the
murky world of Electronic Jazz.
Ever since ‘Los
Angeles’ expectation has always been high on the producer-cum-multi
instrumentalist and Fly Lo doesn’t disappoint. Being related to Alice
Coltrane, wife of the late great Jazz pioneer John Coltrane, it is easy
to see where inspiration for ‘Until the Quite Comes’ is inherently plucked from.
The
opener ‘All In’ bumps along to a jazz rhythm and draws the listener
into the album very comfortably suggesting more a musical journey then a
normal listening experience. There are nods to the Hip-Hop greats
throughout, being a self confessed fan you can hear the J Dilla -esque
beats popping that get your head nodding. (Also cop a view at the pre
release visuals for the salute to the great Jay Dee).
‘Tiny
Tortures’ has delicious heavy bass that’s like having yoghurt poured
over your eardrums. Brainfeeder signing Thundercat provides the bass
work on the album and he is on point for sure. The electronic elements
are there in ‘All the Secrets’ & ‘Putty Boy Strut’ and Putty Boy
sounds like it was lifted from a video game.
Perhaps the
most exciting feature is from Brit hero and over all musical-god, Thom
Yorke. Having previously worked together on ‘Cosmogramma’ he is far from
out of place. For ‘Electric Candyman’ Yorke’s lyrics are typically
haunting and ride over an echoing sound and deep bassline.
Fly
Lo recently tweeted that the album is cut down from 60 different tracks
and you can tell that the album is a carefully and painstakingly made
piece of work. For me there isn’t really a stand out track but as its
Fly Lo we look at ‘Until the Quiet Comes’ as a body of work not your
average album. Having said that ‘The Nightcaller’ is one of my
favorite.
Overall another great album, well crafted, different and a welcomed change from the quiet.
…Also anyone worked out who Captain Murphy is? Tracks produced by Flying Lotus and they are all sick. Would love to know.
Back in August those dope boys over at Pitchfork decided to follow Fly Lo around from Forecastle Festival in Louisville to Chicago for their own Pitchfork Music Festival. If your intrigued to learn more this is a brilliant Mini-Doc on what life is like with the producer on the road. Well worth a watch.
UK fans can catch Flying Lotus on the 'Until the quiet Comes' tour at the Troxy in East London on Friday 16th November. Priced at £27.50, tickets can be copped here. Dont sleep.
