London rapper Jelani Blackman has unveiled new EP ‘Average Joe’, out 30th October via his imprint, 18RECORDS. Premiered by Annie Mac as her ‘Hottest Record’, title track ‘Average Joe’ is shaping up to be one of his biggest tracks to date.
“The energy on this EP is crazy it makes me want to run through fire! The journey to this point has been mad but one of the most rewarding things I’ve done in my life. I learned so much about myself and how to take control of your shit and own who you are. I’m not an average Joe and I hope anyone who hears this will never let the world break them down to feel average or normal or incapable of doing something. Keep pushing hard for whatever it is you want to do” – says Jelani.
A five-track release, ‘Average Joe’ sees Jelani showcase his trademark combination of emotive lyrics and deep, baritone flow. Three tracks from the EP have already been released as singles to much acclaim.
‘Nobody’s Son’, his first release of 2019, was crowned BBC Radio 1 ‘Tune of the Week’, Annie Mac’s ‘Tune of the Week’ and BBC Radio1Xtra ‘Introducing Track of the Week’. ‘Brixton’ was premiered by Annie Mac on her BBC Radio 1 show and went on to receive further support from BBC Radio 1Xtra’s DJ Target and Kenny Allstar amongst others. While latest single ‘Cheers’ received airplay from a long list of tastemakers that includes Annie Mac, Toddla T, and Julie Adenuga.
Jelani hit the reset button at the start of 2019 and came back with a new energy altogether. Getting himself out of a turbulent major deal, he took back full independence and started again from scratch. Living by his philosophy of ‘everything happens for a reason’, he got back in the studio on his terms and starting making music as if he was 17 again. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but Jelani is proving that the best is still yet to come.
Over the next month, you can catch Jelani performing a BBC Introducing at Printworks on 2nd Nov as well as his headline show at Seabright Arms on 21st Nov. Ticket available here.
Featuring a slew of acclaimed tracks, ‘Average Joe’ is a record that looks destined to propel Jelani Blackman to the A-leagues the UK scene.
