Glasgow has always been a fertile breeding ground for house music. With countless internationally-renowned DJs hailing from the city, there is no shortage of world-class talent in the UK’s northern clubbing powerhouse, and the latest duo to break out from the Glaswegian dancefloor are Illyus & Barrientos.
Unsurprisingly, this duo met in a club of their spiritual city back in 2014, building a friendship over their mutual love of unashamedly big, floor-filling modern house they’ve gone on to refine and master since that chance meeting. In terms of compatibility – in many ways – they are a mismatched pairing, with Illyus growing up in the vibrant local hip-hop scene in Frankfurt, Germany then Glasgow, distributing early mixtapes for an enthusiastic audience of friends. Barrientos – raised in America by Chilean parents – was busy taking classical piano lessons, playing Chopin and Beethoven. Yet in the studio, these diverse influences come together to create some spectacular dance floor alchemy. Raw and funky, their tracks pulse with percussive energy and deep, infectious hooks.
With a diverse selection of offerings on DFTD, Suara, Toolroom, Exploited Records and Glasgow Underground thus far, and noteworthy sets at Space Ibiza, Ministry of Sound, Hideout Festival, XOYO, Sub Club, Phonox and Stealth, the duo have a knack of bringing something new to the table that’s as fun as it authentic.
With that in mind, we’re stoked to bring you the premiere for ‘Sounds Like’ – an all-out dancefloor weapon with a drop akin to those that trigger the confetti cannons at elrow. ‘Sounds Like’ makes up 1 of a 4-track release from BBC Radio 1 DJ Danny Howard, which comprises of a brand new collection of club tracks which represent the vibrancy of Danny’s live sets and significantly make up Volume 1 of ‘Nothing Else Matter Tracks – Picked by Danny Howard’.
Howard’s Nothing Else Matters label, signed to Ministry of Sound, was launched in 2015, with 99 Souls’ Platinum-selling ‘The Girl Is Mine’ becoming the first ever track released on the label, amassing over 80 million Spotify plays and scoring a #5 in the UK Singles Charts in the process.
Out on Friday 18th August, on the tracks creation, the duo said: “We wanted sounds like to have a tribal quality yet energetic old skool ravey stabs. Once we managed to get the rhythm right the rest just gelled.”
