In August 2017, Dekmantel Festival will return to the idyllic forest of Amsterdam Bos for it’s fifth consecutive year. The festival has enjoyed a meteoric rise in recent years, emerging as a small, cult festival to one of – if not – one of the leading showcases of house, techno and disco music on offer. In the previous twelve months Dekmantel has broadened its horizons with the first editions of Dekmantel Selectors in Croatia and it’s Brazilian counterpart Dekmantel São Paolo, and this emphasis just how colossal the Dutch label has become.
Dekmantel has cultivated a reputation for curating line ups of equal excellence and variance, and this year is no different. Artists like Motor City Drum Ensemble, Antal, Hunee and Jeff Mills have forged themselves as Dekmantel regulars and this calibre of artist is maintained throughout the rest of the line up. These regulars are joined by a host of the most exciting artists spanning any number of countries and genres. Names such as Larry Heard, Floating Points, Robert Hood and Objekt b2b Call Super will surely entice a plethora of underground music fans. One of the things that sets this festival apart from the rest is its commitment to bringing forward new talent and this year is no different. Shanti Celeste and Beatrice Dillon are both making their debuts this year, a testament to the deserved acclaim they have experienced in the last year or so.
Yet, it is not just the music that makes the festival so special. The coniferous forest in the heart of which Dekmantel is staged provides the perfect setting for the festival, especially the lazy trees that overhang the dancefloor of the Selectors Stage. Also despite the growth of the festival, it has not lost its charm and the crowd it draws is always knowledgeable and mostly free from the ‘Lad Culture’ that has ruined many festivals, particularly in Croatia.
2017 will be the labels 10th birthday and to celebrate the team have extended the festival so that there will now be programmed music from Wednesday through to Sunday. The success of the opening event last year has meant that this year double the number of concerts will take place in various venues on the banks of the IJ river.
With 2017’s stellar line up, Dekmantel is not one to be missed.
