Rewind to 2012, a 19 year old Conor Lloyd, AKA Real Connoisseur uploads ‘Faux de Baux’ onto soundcloud. An email to Radio 1’s B.Traits containing said track then earns him a play on her ‘Hot Off The Desk’ feature. The next thing is he’s signed to and managed by Ben Pearce and his Purp & Soul imprint. Heavy support from Mixmag follows, including a Top 10 playlist selection and numerous track features. Oh and don’t forget a remix of his track Jungle Jakarta by now men of the moment Chaos in the CBD! If ever there was an example of how quickly a talented artist can go from producing in his bedroom to touring with a platinum selling DJ – this is it!
Fast forward to 2017, following a break from music, a move to the east coast of Spain has presumably inspired Real Connoisseur to upload new material. First came ‘The White Label’ which provided a hint of how his productions have evolved during his time away – seemingly from deep house into more techno driven work that’s synonymous with his DJ sets. A club edit of The Jones Girls’s classic ‘Disco Single’ was then followed by ‘Ur Luv is Real’ – both showing the 24 year old’s versatility, the latter displaying that unpolished lo-fi sound.
Perhaps no surprise considering his early uprise, just less than 6 months after sharing new music with his 9k followers, Southampton based label ALiVE Recordings signed Real Connoisseur’s latest production, the “Brown Sugar EP”. Released this week, tracks includes ‘The Stash’ - a techy number with a thumping kick drum sure to build a club vibe and ‘Brown Sugar’, our personal favourite, who’s breakbeat groove, chest-vibrating bassline and D’Angelo vocal wouldn’t sound out of place mid-set from the Hessle Audio selectors.
With support already from James Zebiela and Sasha Robotti, expect the ‘Brown Sugar EP’ to be the catalyst for more in 2018. One things for sure, Real Connoisseur is slowly rebuilding his career and if history is anything to go by it should’t be long until he’s back DJ’ing regularly on the underground circuit. Watch this space!
