Those who follow About To Blow will know we’re big supporters of all things Jaël. With the rise of soul-induced beat making and the ‘future’ boom, artists like Kaytranada, Sango and Evil Needle have, in turn, paved the way for a new generation of gifted producers whose ingenuity and ability to meld styles of r&b with jazz, soul and hip-hop has launched an entirely new genre that’s popularity is almost impossible for the mainstream to ignore.
Sonically speaking, Jaël – residing in The Hague, Netherlands – has become a major player in the future beats scene over the years through his signature production style which draws notable influence from baile funk, house, breaks and r&b of old and new. Having first come across heartfelt cuts like ‘She’ and ‘Lovelude & Floatin‘ back in 2014, he’s since carved a reputation for himself as a producer and multi-instrumentalist who’s versatility and ability to implement his own drums, keys and guitar riffs into his edits has seen his popularity as both producer and DJ soar. Ohh and he also sings – check out his Hotline Bling cover for proof.
Having joined us for arguably our most complete Radio guest mix to date (listen here) at the start of 2017, Jaël will be touching down in London town alongside KLEAR Amsterdam selectors Wantigga and Jengi Beats on Friday November 24th for an unmissable party at Koko Camden to takeover their Burst series. To get you in the mood, we caught up with the ever-jovial beatmaker to run through his favourite productions that have inspired and influenced his sound over the years. Be warned for serious vibrations.
Catch Jaël alongside Wantigga, Jengi Beats & About To Blow DJ’s at Koko Camden on Friday 24th November, tickets & more info here.
Tobias Dray – Focus
Lovely Samba / Bossa Nova vibes is what ease my mind. Tobias Dray killed it with this cozy remix of brandy’s “Sittin up in my room”. I love coming across these kinda vibes! perfect vibe to chill to on a sunday for healing.
TroyBoi – ILI
This one really gives me goosebumps! Everytime i play it just to chill to or in my sets, I get so turned up by the way he used the sample and added TroyBoi signature sounds to it. When listening to tracks like this, my fingers are starting to get itchy to make some new music!
Mr. Carmack – Otis Otis
Carmack NEVER disappoints me. NEVER. I was supporting my bro Jarreau Vandal at a party I can’t remember cuz I was too faded (lol). But he played it and it was the very first time I heard the track. I was literally jumping and closing my eyes when the drop came.. Still remember this golden moment!
Lentra – Hallucinations (I Might Be Going Crazy)
Lentra is really a creative storyteller through music. I never skip his tracks, because you will miss the story he is trying to tell you thru electronic, mellow, warm vibes. He can go from 0 to 100 real quick, but how he does it, that’s just what he’s great at! If you don’t know who Lentra is, go check him out right now!
Mr. Carmack – Tennyson x The Light (Mash)
This lovely mashup is just perfect for a warmup set or just to chill to. i’d love to travel with lovely music, this is one of the tracks i would listen to while traveling. My brother Atu aka Dagger DX (co-founder of our Los Bangeles collective), played this song on one of our monthly radio shows called Los bangeles Radio. I was like (@#$%^&%$#^%), really went nuts when he played this tune. I’m a huge fan of broken beat, jazz, drum breaks and chord changeups – THIS SONG has it all!
DKVPZ – Bonde Do Neo Soul
I’m just in love with Baile Funk forever. Some of ya’ll know that i’m a true Brazilian music digger and love to remix songs into a Baile Funk track. I’ve recently released my Remixes & Club Edits and you can hear that i’ve been inspired by Brazilian music. DKVPZ is really a magic duo. They’ve also collaborated with Sango (The Baile Funk master himself).
Sango – Meio Da Noite
I love to turnup Baile Funk, but I love to chill to it too. This is one of these tracks that you can do both to. Sango has been a great inspiration to me if it comes to this genre. I still remember when I heard his first tracks of “Sango – Da Rocinha 1” That was out on Soulection around 2011 – 2012.
Velha Guarda Da Portela – Vocé Me Abandonou
This is like my 2017 Anthem. When I’m on my way to a show, i listen to this song for like 3/4 times on repeat. This track opens my mind and lets me feel free. again, GOOSEBUMPS! Thanks to my brother Urvinho & Faya from PONY & Los Bangeles, I got this track. It was a day after our lovely event in Rotterdam and we were getting ready to head out to Expedition festival with the crew, he told me I had to listen to a song that I will love. When he played this song I was literally screaming! I’ll never forget that moment!
Samba Squad – Xango
Like ya’ll know, I’m in love with Samba music. So before I play my show, I listen to this track whilst traveling/walking to the venue. Samba and Bossa Nova really touches me and moves my heart. My parents fed me with Soul, Funk, Jazz, Jazz-Rock, Fusion, R&B, Hiphop and I mixed all of these genres and I came across Samba & Bossa Nova. When I was young, this was the thing I was looking for and I studied it till I could play along similar grooves and rhythms. This is one of my favourite genres forever.
SMOOTH OPERATOR 3000 – La Malanga
This track is just the best combination of Salsa x Future Beats! a huge S/O to Smooth Operator 3000! I’ve caught myself playing this track at all of my sets! This is my golden ticket track from future beats to Baile Funk. The genre in between i call Future Baile. I’m so in love with the original too! “ Mercado Negro – La Malanga”. I call this a classic!
