Just over a year has passed since we first wrapped our ears around a new track by an emerging star otherwise recognised as a Hip-Hop turntablist. For years, Ms Yasmin Shahmir (otherwise known as DJ Yasmin) had steadily made a name for herself as a crowd pleaser from behind the decks as she began mastering the art of DJ-ing early on, however once she managed to get in touch with all-round god and NERD front man Pharrell Williams who caught wind of her abilities the rest, as they say, is history.Fast forward a few years and after making a huge underground name for herself on the DJ circuit, the breakthrough came in the form of debut single On My Own. Possessing a recognisably angelic voice, the Glaswegian has gone from strength to strength since the turn of the year and has worked with some of the biggest producers out there for her eagerly awaited debut Album, dropping early next year.
Ed Sheeran aside, its an elusive task to declare any artist who’s worked harder then the 23 year old during 2011, who managed to show her face and perform at just about every festival this year it seemed.
With her latest single, the carnivalesque “Light Up The World” dropping on the 15th January we had the chance to catch up with the dj, singer, fashionista and self-proclaimed ‘professional hustler’ as she talked us through her love of dj-ing, how to tour with no sleep, working with Shy FX and what we can expect from the new album. With some of the producers on board overlooking the debut album there’s high hopes expected. Check the interview and the vibrant video below, shot on location in Cuba.
