We caught up with soul singer Aisha Zoe after releasing her 3-track multi-collaborative cover project ‘Flowers’ that pays respect to Andrew Ashong and Theo Parrish’s 2013 hit. The recently released project is an ode to the prestigiously awarded Gilles Peterson’s Track of the Year, and sees Warren Xclnce, K15 and Liston give 3 entirely innovative interpretations of the cover record, with the individual tracks premiering via I-D magazine, Stamp the Wax and Zoe’s bandcamp respectively. We spoke to AZ about her ideas behind the project, her musical journey and some forthcoming endeavours below.
1. Hi AZ how are you doing? It’s been a while since we last caught up how has your new year been? 2016 treating you okay so far?
2016 is lively. Just samba dancing, juicing, teaching and creating a lot. I am very inspired by being here in London. Flowers has gone on I-D and Stamp The Wax which is a real amazing dream of mine, and Kerri Chandler remixed a track I did with Citizenn which has been a dream too. Also receiving a lovely balloon from Fatima that lifted me.
2. You’re just released a new project called Flowers can you tell us how it came about and your inspiration behind it?
Was firework inspiration at the end of summer by a beat Liston sent me to work on! I desired to flip “Flowers,” by Andrew and Theo, it has been lyrically and musically close to my heart. I want to try to have a collaborative collective within all my work, and bring like minds together on projects from North to South. I always have and has been a positive step.
3. So you chose 5 artists to create different pieces mixes and interpretations. What made you choose these 5 specific artists?
All the artists bring something equally defining and genuine in a soulful and heartfelt way, mix racing genres and pushing diverse qualities, all of which I want to represent within my work and being. Liston, K15 and Mr Xclnce have been good friends of mine for a while, Warren has this vibe that we just flow from afar, I was the first to buy his Eargasm sounds, probably about 5 years ago, and we’ve been in touch ever since. K and I have been working on a lot of music together for the past couple years after meeting in a session with Henry Wu, he’s played a very inspirational role in my life advising me with plenty of careful wisdom, Liston is very humble they all are, but Liston is the originator of the Flowers baby he inspired my vocal chops and that whole stylised way of using my voice like a instrument! He lives next door to my cousin and is like my brother.
Lily and Emily are part of my new baby crew “WomanHoodMatters,” they have come together out of this project which is what I hoped would happen.
I am proud to of had the opportunity to work with everyone involved.
4. You music has evolved since the days of MadTech and AZ and Tor how do you describe your sound now and the journey you have been on?
My hopes have changed and I want to develop and be confident in my ideas. I have learnt a lot about greater responsibilities, through care-work and teaching roles, and you know life! Loss has also opened my eyes to face new challenges I appreciate shaping my own life before becoming a part of someone else’s. I am beyond caring what people think because I used to care so much. I am trying to learn to listen a lot more and be conscious and mindful of what energies I am putting out. My sound is back to my roots again, a lot more floaty hip-hop, samba, soul groove and jazz. I am putting a band together and Djing aswell.
5. What has been inspiring you recently? What are you listening to?
I am listening to Fritz Wentink, K15 & AZ, (haha) Ben Hauke, Kerri Chandler & Yordanos, a beautiful artist and dear friend, she inspired me recently… She delivered a message…. to choose to live your life through actions of Love or Fear. That definitely resinates and is something I am applying now. Trying and enjoying to Love of course!
6. and finally, what can we expect from you this year? Anything else exciting lined up?
Im gonna be playing out and about DJ’ing, I am writing my new album, and I have some tracks coming out, with Citizenn, K15, Ben Hauke. I am also going to be on NTS Radio with lovely Kim & Pia on the 5th March where I will be playing some new shit. Thanks for having me hope you enjoy Flowers.
