In ‘Your Charizmatic Self’ Night Slugs boss Alex Sushon, otherwise known as Bok Bok, releases his first EP since 2011’s ‘Southside’. His modern approach to funk and grime creates an abstract soundscape full of perfectly timed reverbs and delays, which serves as the perfect backdrop to Kelela’s soulful yet fragile vocal on opener ‘Melba’s Call’.
The heavy use of reverb emphasizes space, helping the listener visualize Bok Bok’s concrete-forest world, examples of this can found in ‘Howard’ and ‘Greenhouse (Night)’ as there are moments where everything will just stop, making you consider every sound you hear.
‘Greenhouse (Day)’ serves as a glistening interlude before the appropriately titled ‘Funkiest (Be Yourself)’ kicks in. The song is a sub bass driven cut built around an interesting drum arrangement, the approach to production is reminiscent to Benga’s ‘Night’ (reminisce here) as both contain a laid-back atmosphere which you’ll definitely find yourself nodding your head to. ‘Da Foxtrot’ is a continuation of this theme whilst solidifying the funk influence even further.
In summary, ‘Your Charizmatic Self’ is a genre bending and forward thinking release from an artist who never fails to excite his audience.
