Emerging North London Afro-R&B talent Atueyii has unveiled debut EP ‘Love & War’, out 21st October.
A six-year project that has been three years in the making, ‘Love & War’ is a vibrant record that showcases Atueyii’s soulful, feelgood sound, and touches on themes surrounding struggle, romance and overcoming adversity.
The EP begins with recent single ‘As I Pray’, a powerful, heart-on-sleeve ballad pairing his own impassioned vocals with a smooth, sunkissed Afrobeats production. Steeped in honest emotion, it very much sets the tone for the rest of the record. Next up is ‘We Collide’, the second and final single of ‘Love & War’, a track that touches on a whirlwind romance that leaves a lasting impression. ‘Bad Guy’ is Atueyii at his most sensual, pairing risqué lyrics with a similarly suggestive sax solo. ‘Maybe Us’ is an infectiously uplifting affair, compelled by a warm melody that as Atueyii lays his cards on the table to his special lady, while ‘One’ is altogether more poignant, propelled by deep, untamed love. EP closing track ‘Pull Up’ is a powerful tour de force that, in Atueyii’s words, is “about ‘pulling up’ to the party and going all out to have a good time” and ensures the record finishes on an introspective note.
“’Love and War’ the EP is really about the battles we face in life.” Atueyii explains on its creation. “Whether it be finding a way to remain whole and strong through it, or breaking down and allowing yourself to “feel” through it. These songs are here to help us remember that it is okay to love life and be passionately driven but also to go to “war” in expression of that passion.
The songs on the EP have titles that give you a glimpse into what they’re explicitly about. ‘As I Pray’ was written as I had a difficult moment coming to terms with what I was going through at the time and I saw it fit to be the first song on the EP to usher the listeners in through the journey of the project with “prayer.”
To celebrate the release, Atueyii hosted a live showcase of the EP at Soho House Brixton on Thursday 20th October.
A Nigeria-born, North London-raised singer-songwriter and producer, Atueyii brings an exciting fusion of Afrobeats and R&B. Singing from as early as he can remember, and producing from the age of 15, he has dedicated many years to perfecting his self-taught musical stylings. Over time his sound has evolved, embracing a provocative blend of R&B, Afrobeats, dancehall and soul.
His previous output has quietly amassed over half a million streams and been supported by the likes of GRM Daily, Wonderland, Factory 78 and more. On the live stage, Atueyii also supported Mr Eazi on his Lagos II London Tour in 2019 alongside M.O and Sneakbo, having been personally selected by the Nigerian with his sound set to captivate the ears of many, giving us nostalgic melodies for moments we never even had, or wish we did.
An astounding debut EP, ‘Love & War’ is the work of an artist destined for greatness.
