Well after emerging from complete obscurity (at least on UK shores) and becoming NME’s coolest person in record time, twenty year old Harlem rapper, singer and all round cool cat Azealia Banks has been the talk of the town for a few months now, and after topping most ‘Best of 2011′ lists the hype’s most definitely set to continue into the new year.
Part of the reason why Azealia caused such a stur was through her unique ability scarcely seen in recent times to combine a stellar flow together with tongue-in-cheek lyrics that can either be delivered at ultrasonic speed or slowed down for a singalong. Either way, Gwyneth Paltrow’s favourite new artist is out to take over and just when the ‘212’ storm had whethered (which for many was seen as one of this years biggest electro-club jams) she’s treated fan’s with a new track fresh off her Tumblr page over the weekend.
Whereas on ‘212‘ we saw her saucy, explicit and unashamed love to get sexed up in full enigmatic flow, the ever angelic Banks has opted to take the brilliance of Nottingham’s techno-house producer Lone’s ‘Pineapple Crush’ and smooth it out in a way we were yet to see. Yet this is where it becomes ever harder to veer away from the similarities to a certain Nikki Minaj (we tried, we really did) but the way she showcases her ability to spit and sing in one fell swoop makes it inevitable.
Currently working with producer Paul Epworth, Liquorice’s breakbeat overtone comes with a real 90’s vibe that of course is supplemented and elevated by Banks’ accelerated and light delivery. This time she rhymes about the possibility of giving herself up for that guy she’s been after, where she questions;
” I bet ya been extra gassed, bet ya really wanna touch up on the molasses ass, bet ya really wanna tongue up on her kizzat (cat; vagina) today, cause her kizzat sh-shaved, you wanna cuddle with ya bitch after ey? “
Considering its content, the way she unashamedly decided to publish the lyrics for Liqourice gives us another reason to love this girl even more, and since announcing she’s been exchanging emails with Sir Yeezy (Mr Kanye West) over the past week its hard to see anything but success coming Banks’ way in 2012.
