You’ve recently released a new track, ‘First Time’, what was the inspiration behind the track?
I think energy was the main inspiration for this song. This is, by far, the most energetic song I have ever written and, as a result, it’s so fun to play out live.
How long did it take you to produce it and what was the process?
It took a couple of days to write. I went down to Brighton to work with the talented Kideko at his studio. We started with the big, loud drop. I just improvised some soulful shouts into the microphone, then we messed around with them and sampled them until we got to the drop as we know it now. Then I went in with the lyrics. The lyrics of the song tell a short tale of how one sees past experiences in a much more positive way than how they actually happened.
When you go into the studio, do you have something in mind of what you want to produce or do you improvise?
Usually, I don’t see any point of going into a song with an idea of where it’s going to end up. That takes the fun out of it anyway. I always try and let the song make itself. If a sound works, then I just roll in the direction of that sound until I end up with lots of sounds at once, making up the song.
Alongside it are three remixes from MANT, Riva Starr and WiDE AWAKE, why did you choose these remixes to release and what do you like about each one?
What I love about the MANT remix is the groove of the bass. It’s so sassy. The WiDE AWAKE remix is special because it captures the energy of the original drop. Also, I’m an absolute sucker for some trap beats. The Riva Starr remix I love for the percussion – there are some really nice, intricate bits in there.
You played a huge headline show at XOYO last week, what did you do to prepare for the show? Were there any surprises or new tracks during the performance that you can tell us about?
It was a really exciting performance, I mixed lots of new music on with the old and the new stuff had a great reception which was amazing to see. The new stuff has tremendous energy and is really bouncy, the crowd really responded to that.
Today marks the release day for ‘Difficult To Love’, the 2nd part of ‘First Time’. What can you tell us about this track?
It’s different from First Time as it’s a bit more chilled but very bouncy and a little more dancey. Not too dancey though. I’m really excited about this track as I got to work with Ben Pearce on it, which was an incredible experience. You can stream the track on my Soundcloud now here.
What are your plans and goals for 2017?
The plan is to release a larger collection of music later in the year, which I’m very excited about. My goals are that people, other than myself, will like it. Other than that, I’m just gunna keep on writing at every spare moment I have when I’m not playing shows
