Fur Coat Talk Us Through Their Essential Festival Records [SXM Festival Exclusive]

By AboutToBlow @AboutToBlowBlog · On March 8, 2017

It’s fair to say that Fur Coat—The collaborative project of Sergio Muñoz and Israel Sunshine—has made seismic strides since their debut some seven years ago. Having been sounded out by Crosstown Rebels’ mastermind Damian Lazarus, the duo’s joint endeavours has seen their tech-focused productions conquer a plethora of the scene’s biggest labels that, in turn, has helped them generate a global presence, culminating in consistent club and festival appearances across the globe.

Having first burst on to the scene with the warped and wonky “Space Ballad” EP, the Barcelona-based duo have since explored a darker, more melodic strain of techno that has more recently seen their rich discography stretch across esteemed imprints more endemic to their recent sounds, including Watergate, Gorilla, MOOD and AEON, to name a few.

In total, The Venezuelan natives have carved out a sizeable selection of EP’s, LP’s and compilations amassing in excess of 65 releases across 12 memorable years. It’s no surprise then, that supply brings demand, and with it a touring schedule that shows no signs of slowing, with the duo already taking their club-ready sounds to Canada, Tunisia, Dubai and Jakarta since the turn of the year.

Yet one destination they’ve unlikely to have sampled before are the picturesque shores of St. Martin, a luxury island nestled in the heart of the Caribbean that plays host to the sought-after SXM Festival. Having launched in style last year, the five-day party will see the twosome spin alongside the likes of Ame, Black Coffee, Guti, Nina Kraviz and Jamie Jones, as it seeks to solidify its new-found status amongst the luxury festival elite.

SXM Festival on the island of St. Martin

With under two weeks until the music begins, we caught up with the guys  to find out what tunes never fail to get the party started, and their favourite moments dropping them.

1- Fur Coat – Odisea / Last Night on Earth / Coachella 2016 Indio, California

We had this track fresh from the studio last year when we travelled to play at Coachella two weekends. Gives us great memories and great feeling when you roadtest a track and you see those first reactions. What better feeling than seeing it work on the Yuma Tent in Coachella, think it will be a long lasting memory for us.

2-Voiski – Happy Piece For Happy People Piece / Dekmantel / DGTL Barcelona 2016

We played it almost at the last part of our set during DGTL Fest during summer 2016. Barcelona being our hometown and playing in this great festival, at the wornderfull stage and seeing the crowd go crazy, filled us with joy. This release from Voiski is something really different, groovy and makes people go off!

3-Patrice Baumel – Reich:Drumming (Patrice Baumel Rework) / Decca (UMO)/ Dockyards Festival ADE 2016

One of our favorite tracks last summer. Very effective, percussive, and perfect for the peak of the set. It creates a lot of tension and build up with the snare hits on the drop, when it comes back the reaction is massive. We still remember the good time of being at the FACT/ Sci-Tec stage, hanging out with friends and Dubfire, drinking an amazing sake! From there we hop straight to Bilbao to play that same night at Sala Sonora.

4- Fur Coat – Monday / Balance Music/ Audioriver Festival 2015 Plock, Poland

This was few month after the release of our mix cd on Balance Music. Audioriver is such a great festival! Not only we got to hang out that day, but also go to see Roisin Murphy live, really nice show. Monday makes us remember that festival as was one of the highlights tracks on our set.

5-Magit Cacoon – Love Express / Upon You Records/ Lightning in a Bottle 2015 Bradley, California

Very loopy track, techno track. Played it probably at the peak of our set of Lightning in a Bottle festival. Such a great vibe here and the Do the Lab stage was on top of a like a tree. Love the light installations and art in the middle of the dancefloor.

6-Konstantin Sibold – Mutter/ Running Back/ Loveland Amsterdam 2016

Its a very emotional track, with a trancy vibe but with the essence of techno. One of those summer tracks that really work and get people to an emotional vibe. Remember this track cause also later Sven Vath played it in another stage. This was a track that definitely didnt left our bags during last summer.

7- Scuba – Black on Black (Len Faki goes black remix) / Hotflush/ We Can Dance Festival 2015 Zeebrugge

A festival of some good friends from us in Belgium. Have the opportunity to go twice to this one, (One to play and one to hang). Its a festival with a concept that gathers food, art and different things in front of the beach in Zeebrugge. The vibe is amazing. This track was also one that was constantly on our sets and festivals in 2015. Probably our favorite remix from Len Faki!

8-Radio Slave – Vision/ Rekids/ Marvellous Island 2016 (Elrow Stage) Paris

One of our favorite Radio Slave tracks, although we always play music from him in our sets. This track reminds us closing that stage, was total madness. As alway the guys from El Row throw an amazing party with the great experience of Marvellous Island festival, where we have played twice.

9- Daniel Avery – Drone Logic (Rodhad Remix) /Chocolate Festival / Laussane 2015

We love this one from Rodhad. This was a great festival in Laussane, remember that day we got crazy traffic to get there. We made it on time, and although it was still cold and raining, it was indoor. The vibe of the people was great. We closed the stage after My Favorite Robot.

10-Steve Rachmand – Disturbance (Drumcode Ltd) / Day Zero Festival 2016 / Mexico

We been playing Day Zero since day one. Probably one of our favorite locations and productions in 2016. It was in a magical cenote with an amazing vibe. We can remember playing disturbance by Steve, definitely a highlight in our set!
