Golden Age Babies
A few weeks ago a friend invited me to a music showcase in South London where unsigned artists were performing. The showcase, held at an intimate venue in Croydon, was a chance for new and emerging artists to promote their brand both on and off the stage, as they were given a chance to mix within the crowd and communicate further with the audience, following their performance. The hosts of this event were Golden Age Babies, a promising independent record label, whose main aim on the night was to shed some light on their own burgeoning roster of musical talents.
The name Golden Age Babies alludes to the key elements that bind this group together, which is their affection for the golden age of hip hop, a period widely considered to be from the early to mid 90s. This also happens to be the period in which all current members of the collective were born, hence the ‘Babies’ affix. Their assembly of talent is made up of four members; Mello D (Producer), Ashcon (DJ & Producer), Twist (MC) & Ryan Allen who takes on most managerial duties. The foursome met at different times throughout education, with their friendships strengthened by their common love of music and in particular Hip Hop. As their label name suggests, the group are heavily influenced by 90s hip hop, something that is very noticeable in each individual’s production or rapping style.
Mello D started producing music way back around 2005, citing the emergence of Grime as a key reason for initially getting involved. This hobby soon became a passion when he decided to study a music course at college, where he first met the current members of the label. His musical influences are the likes of J. Dilla, Just Blaze and Kanye West, with the latter’s ‘College Dropout’ being one of his favourite albums due to the production style. Mello D has crafted his own sound by taking the soulful elements of Dilla and Kanye production, mixed with the flair of Just Blaze’s signature work, culminating in beats that are created far too rarely on these shores. ‘D’ expresses that the fact you can create music, something that has such an influence in people’s lives, in your own room fascinated him from the outset.
Producer & DJ Ashcon first began mastering his craft around 2009, heavily influenced by the work of J. Dilla, Pete Rock, DJ Premier & 9th Wonder. This is obvious in most of his production, mixing soulful sounds with neck snapping drum patterns, but it’s his versatility that is most impressive as he’s able to craft beats of great diversity. Ashcon declares that the making of music keeps him sane, which is something that people of this art form can definitely relate to.
The sole MC and founder of the label, Oliver ‘Twist’, started writing lyrics the same way most MC’s do, but scribbling a couple lines here and there, but he began to take it seriously when he linked up with Mello D, around 2008/9. As a potent lyricist, it will come as no surprise that some of Twist’s strongest influences stem from the likes of NaS, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar & Joey Bada$$. His way with words is at times mesmerising, coupled with his flow that leaves listeners hanging on every word. We should expect a forthcoming EP from Twist, where he displays his lyrically ability over a selection of J. Dilla instrumentals.
The group’s strong belief in each other’s ability is the core reason why they’ve decided to build this label, as well as having the creative control that is only available as independent artists. They’re currently looking ahead to a solid year of growth, hosting more events and releasing new music, the most recent being Mello D’s latest beat tape, that was released 26th October 2014. I’m excited at what’s to come from this collective of talented individuals, and we will be following their progress and development here at About To Blow.
