It’s almost two years now since a relatively unknown production duo collaborated with a newly graduated South Londoner to create what was to become somewhat of a sleeper hit in the form of ‘Nervous’. Equally distinctive as it was original, everyone’s favourite masked performers SBTRKT brought together elements of late naughties Garage alongside the intensity of the producers own unique style, merging a bass-infused electronic style with a soulful edge primarily down to Jessie Ware‘s beautifully melodic tone.
Fast forward to 2012 and since the success of ‘Nervous’ its been abundantly clear Miss Ware was always going to be a star, in the same way Katy B always had the backing of Rinse’s production contingent who were capable of creating something progressive and individual, Ware has yet to release a record that hasnt had quality smeared all over it.
From ‘Valentine’ to ‘The Vision’, these records are as atmospheric as they are emotive, and following her first solo release ‘Strangest Feeling’ last october (cast an eye over our verdict here) we’ve been patiently waiting for a taste of her solo album material to drop and the first sample does not disappoint.
Managing to blend something that’s equally contemporary as it is nostalgic, ‘Running’ isnt too far off 2011’s heart-felt offering ‘Valentine’, although with lyrics like “I’m lost again, its happening, when I’m around you my knees go weak, all I wanna know is it mutual, then I never want to leave” the topic may be touching on the darker side of being in love, unlike the cutesy undertones of ‘Valentine’. Either way House supremo Julio Bashmore produced this jam alongside The Invisible’s Dave Okumu and that retro Sade vibe is there for all to enjoy.
Whilst she may be at the latter stages of putting together her long-awaited album due for release this summer, ‘Running’ will be available on PMR Records from March 26th, until then the tastefully styalised video should be enough to keep the wait ticking over nicely. Sensual on just about every level.
The brilliantly blissful Club refix courtesy of the Disclosure boys is also exceptionally dope. Bouyantly bringing back that 90’s House style, this one’s also available to pre-order as of now. You know what to do.
