Glancing back to the earliest days of AboutToBlow one of the more perspicuous trends we regularly preached was the impending post-dubstep boom & with it the clutch of artists that so gallantly spearheaded the movement. Breaking out of the PMR camp in mysterious fashion was a young producer from South London who brought us a clutch of tracks that transcended genre in such a way we likened him to greats like Flying Lotus & J Dilla. His name was Two Inch Punch.
Fast forward two years and the spatial yet soulfully creative elements so expertly implemented on jams like Luv U Up & Luv Luv have only been heightened & maximised further if the Meridian Dan refix is anything to go by. Thanks to platforms like Rinse FM, 1xtra & Butterz the Grime movement is the healthiest its been for quite some time, & following the phenomenal success of the Tottenham MC’s ‘German Whip’ the scope for Grime music is somewhat in demand again.
Having already blossomed the careers of TIP, Disclosure, Jessie Ware, Julio Bashmore & T Williams its fitting that Acton’s PMR have been bold enough to see the potential in Meridian Dan to ink terms on a deal with the label. To celebrate, one of the track’s most vocal supporter’s Zane Lane gained premier rights to the official TIP remix on his Radio 1 show, which keeps things around the 140 mark and reverts to a more emotive, synth led slow-jam feel. Crucially the bars remain intact as TIP does what he does best.
New from the PMR camp is that a debut album is due later this year, in the meantime let this one play out. “German whip but I ain’t in Berlin trust…”
