West London artist Xadi kicks off 2021 with contemplative new single ‘Movies’.
A candid, honest portrait depicting feelings of nostalgia from bygone relationships, ‘Movies’ pairs contemplative lyrics with delicate production. Self-shot and self-edited, the similarly pensive official video sees Xadi reflecting on his personal situation while watching the sunset with the cliff edge as the backdrop. It follows October single ‘Mañana’ featuring Manchester-based artist Nina Cobham, which has racked up almost 200,000 streams to date.
“I was messing around on my guitar, and came across these chords which felt really nostalgic and instantly brought to mind that old film reel ticking sound” Xadi explains. “Watching movies in the cinema feels like a timestamp to me, so the song had to be a reminiscent one. ‘Movies’ is a reflection on some of the lesser experiences I’ve had with people as well as the way I have gone about processing them”.
A musician, rapper and producer, Xadi is building a reputation around his unique songwriting ability and honest, soulful lyrical expression. Drawing on elements of hip-hop, R&B, jazz, grime and many other genres, he dropped debut EP ‘On Est’ back in 2019, a balanced reflection on his own situation at the time, whilst also commenting on wider societal issues in London. More recently he has garnered support from BBC Radio 1Xtra, NTS, Rinse, No Signal and Foundation FM following the release of follow-up EP ‘Day Ends’, as well as being tipped on Reprezent Radio’s ‘Facing Forward’ artist series for 2021, and iluvlive’s top 10 ‘Hotlist’ for 2021.
Also receiving love from the likes of Kojey Radical and Frankie Stew & Harvey Gunn, ‘Movies’ sees Xadi pour his thoughts and feelings into a stunning sonic collage.
