Hailing from the banks of the East over in Chelmsford, Essex, I must admit I was almost caught unawares by London’s latest Electronic prodigy GOLD PANDA until his latest release was brought to my attention.
Although handed the name of Derwin at birth, Gold Panda’s journey has been an arduous and intermittently strange one. Initially, he spent his day-job within the confinements of various retailers — adult bookstores, record shops — finding that the two were equally seedy. He later spent the rest of his waking hours accumulating a library of scatty yet original electronic music incorporating an eclectic mix of influences and source material. The results were gleaming instrumental hip-hop tracks saturated with bright colors and sublimely chopped-up vocal samples. Thus, Gold Panda was founded.
Having built up a sufficient volume of music, Gold Panda began publicising refixes to various labels, blogs, and websites, all of whom began to take note.
SO, fastforward on to 2010 and GP’s first major album release “Lucky Shiner” was born, and with it a layered compilation of material so absorbing and comprehensive its almost impossible not to re-listen to try and get to grips with it.
Having taken somewhat of a back-burner off the Electro-Dance movement in recent times, its genuinely refreshing to hear a track that encapsulates the sound of summer so effortlessly even in the early stages of the year that it deserves to be applauded. Ultimately, “Marriage” is a definite stand out from the album and the vibe that surrounds it is nothing but positive.
Chilled. Broody. Recommended.
