South London jazz talent Anjelo Disons has unveiled new double-single ‘Time’ / ‘Brighter Day’.
First up, ‘Time’ is a heartfelt and free-spirited jam that combines fluttering piano chords, meandering sax and the impassioned vocals of Mula & Vels. “Time, like most of my songs, was initially recorded as a voice note.” Anjelo explains. “I remember going to the studio after, before I’d even written the rest, laying down the track with my brothers Jordan Hatfield & Wilf Cameron Marples in one take!”
“Eventually, over the course of a month I’d say, I would write the song and invite the talented Oracle Saxophonist Deji Ijishakin & Mula who brought in fellow Society of Alumni member Vels to bless the track with a beautifully constructed verse. Time is about me coming to the realisation with my peers that everything in life from the birth of a bird to the death of a tree happens in time. I feel the song expresses throughout what is meant to be yours will come, but takes the ultimate patience through life to allow it manifest.”
On the flip, the inspirational ‘Brighter Day’ pairs electric guitars with grime MC Yizzy’s rapid-fire flow. “Brighter Day is a song I’d been working on for a long time with several different versions made.” Anjelo discusses. “It found its final form in a phenomenal session with Oracle member Lorenz Okello. We started the song from scratch knowing that we’d need a fire second verse. Eventually me and Yizzy’s path aligned with his studio being next to mine. I remember playing the track as he walked past; the rest is history. After Yizzy killed the verse I was ecstatic at the fact the song was finally finished! The song is about the yearning for happier times during the darker moments of life. If you keep moving, keep going you’ll always come to a Brighter Day in life.”
His first release since ‘Nothing To Lose’, a 2019 collaboration with fellow London artist S7VEN, both ‘Time’ and ‘Brighter Day’ are a taste of what to expect on Anjelo’s forthcoming EP ‘The Garden’, out later in the year.
A budding, 22-year-old multi-instrumentalist who was mentored by scene aficionado Julian Joseph, Anjelo attended the coveted BRIT School and plays in the band The Oracle, which includes musicians who work with Tom Misch, Dave, Kali Claire and Blue Lab Beats. He has also engineered and produced for a long list of artists that includes Hak Baker, Rak Su, Yizzy, Morgan Monroe and Bshp.
The work of a supremely talented individual, ‘Time’ / ‘Brighter Day’ is set to have UK jazz fans buzzing for Anjelo Disons’ forthcoming EP.
